Only 10 minutes walk from each other are the Golden Roof, the landmark of the city of Innsbruck, a late Gothic oriel adorned with 2,657 fire-gilded shingles and grotesque figurines, the city tower with a unique view of the surrounding alleys, the famous colorful houses on the Inn riverbank, and the shopping mile Maria-Theresien-Straße with many small shops and the ultra-modern Tyrol department store. City tours take place daily at 11 am (German) and 2 pm (English) (tickets available at the Innsbruck Information shop).
The Hungerburgbahn takes you from the city center to the top of the Nordkette in just a few minutes. The stations of the funicular railway were planned and designed by architect Zaha Hadid. Also on the Nordkette: the Alpine Zoo with 150 species from the Alpine region, enclosures and aviaries, aquariums and terrariums. Meanwhile, south of Innsbruck on Bergisel, you can find the ski jump, also designed by Zaha Hadid, as well as the Tyrol Panorama in the Kaiserjäger Museum, a 1,000 m² circular painting depicting the Tyrolese struggle for freedom in 1809.
High above the city, on the southern edge of Innsbruck and surrounded by gardens, lies Ambras Castle. In the 14th century, Habsburg Archduke Ferdinand II began collecting art and rare items here. The Habsburg Portrait Gallery exhibits over 200 pictures by well-known artists! On the other hand, the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum displays our history from the Stone Age to the present: Tyrolean prehistory, art history, cartography and everyday life, and some instruments of the famous Tyrolean violin maker Jakob Stainer.
The Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, 20 km east of Innsbruck, have become one of Austria's most popular destinations since their opening in 1995! The glittering world of wonders, created by exceptional artist André Heller, consists of a total of 17 wonder rooms, where national and international artists, designers and architects interpret the material crystal in their own way. The restaurant, café with patisserie and of course the shop are further visitor attractions.
